O Velho Eurico

Chef José Paulo Rocha is the ambitious chef behind O Velho Eurico, a Lisbon restaurant where he reinterprets Portuguese tradition with soul and authenticity.

Born in Lisbon with Minho roots, he discovered cooking at home as an act of sharing. A graduate of the Lisbon School of Tourism in Culinary Arts, he began in the family business before joining Taberna Sal Grosso in 2018.

At just 21 years old, he opened O Velho Eurico in 2019—his signature project. The restaurant earned the Mesa Diária Prize from Mesa Marcada in 2021, 2022, and 2023, a testament to its consistency and public acclaim.

His cuisine pays tribute to Portuguese gastronomy and the enduring tradition of warm hospitality, transforming childhood memories into plates that honour flavour, family, and community.

For dinner go to Gambrinus and grab a seat at the counter. Order a croquette, barley bread toast, Ibérico ham, and a prego. Three or four imperiais will pair perfectly.
For seafood, head to Penalva da Graça—my favorite marisqueira in Lisbon.
Almost every week, the Eurico team has breakfast at Leitaria da Celeste. My personal favorite is butter toast with UCAL milk. It's a true local spot—be nice and they'll take care of you.
